Location

This discipline-specific training course will be based at Taplow Lake but may also use the Jubilee River which is a few minutes’ walk from the lake. There is parking at the lake or Taplow railway station is 15 min’s walk away (3/4 mile)

Pre-requisites

  • British Canoeing membership
  • British Canoeing Core Coach or previous Level 2 Coach (or higher) training

You will also need a good knowledge of intermediate boat handling skills in either canoe or kayak (or both). Prior to training, boat-based coaches should ensure that their personal and leadership skills are well practiced; this will allow you to focus on developing your coaching rather than your paddling. The British Canoeing Coach Award Course Guide includes further information and a useful checklist of the skills required.

Candidate Registration

All candidates are required to register for the award with British Canoeing before going forward to assessment, but it is not a requirement before coming on this training course. (or national association if appropriate).  Please note registration is separate to British Canoeing membership. Please use the following link from British Canoeing website - https://www.britishcanoeing.org.uk/coaching-leadership/guidance-resources/registration-guidance

Course Programme

The course runs from 09:00-18:00 each day. Please help yourself and your fellow candidates by arriving promptly for each session. Please aim to be at Engage Watersports at 08:45 on the first day.

Bank Based Coaches

Bank-based coaches will be welcomed at this course however if you wish to work exclusively from the bank during the course you must advise this at the time of booking, so we can ensure the availability of participants to act as students for the practical water-based activities.

Personal Clothing and Equipment

Please bring personal clothing and equipment suitable for going afloat or working from the bank appropriate to the weather conditions forecast for each day of the course. This should include water/wind proof outerwear and a hat. Please also bring personal paddling/coaching equipment, including a buoyancy aid if you have this.

If you wish to bring your own boat and paddle(s) great, but this is not absolutely necessary as we will be using a variety of craft from the Engage Watersports fleet during the course. Engage Watersports can also provide spare clothing/equipment for those that may require it i.e. wetsuits, buoyancy aids and windproof tops but please let us know in advance if you do require any item.

Other Facilities

Please note we have a reasonably priced café on site that provides hot and cold food and refreshments, if you prefer to bring a packed lunch then that’s fine but we would ask that this is consumed away from the café area if it is busy. A water bottle/hydration system to take afloat/use at the bank side is recommended.
