Date and Time

Dates to be confirmed

Duration: 2 days

Start time: 09:00

Finish time: 17:00

The course will be based at Taplow Lake but may also use the Jubilee River which is a few minutes’ walk from the lake. There is parking at the lake or Taplow railway station is 15 min’s walk away (3/4 mile).

Course Programme

The 2 star is an improvement award that helps paddlers develop fundamental paddlesport skills on flat water. The emphasis is on gaining a breadth of experience, creating the desired movement of the boat and developing an understanding into how the paddle, boat and water interact. The award is obtained by taking the assessment in both a kayak and a canoe. Any style of kayak or canoe is permissable e.g. open cockpit, sit on top, v shaped hull or flat bottomed etc. Where a doubles crew takes the test each person must perform each task from both the bow and the stern. For further details on the course please see the 2 Star Syllabus.

Please note on successful completion of this course there is a £7 (£6 British Canoeing members) certification fee payable directly to British Canoeing.

Candidates must be able to swim 25 metres wearing a bouyancy aid.

Have experience of paddling two different craft

  •  e.g. Surf kayak, closed cockpit kayak, open cockpit kayak, closed cockpit canoe, single open cockpit canoe, racing boat, tandem open cockpit canoe, waves ski, sit on top, flat hulled boat, v shaped hull, slalom boat, polo boat or sea kayak.
In two different locations
  • e.g. canal, river, lake / loch, or sea (different parts of large bodies of water will count as two locations)

And have completed two local competitions OR two journeys of two hour plus duration.

If under 14 the learning programme of Paddle Power might be more appropriate.

Personal Clothing and Equipment

Engage Watersports will provide wetsuits, spray tops and buoyancy aids and all boating equipment you will need for the course, all of which is included in the price of the course. Each participant will need to bring along swimwear, a towel, shoes you are happy to get wet in, and a rash vest/thermal top or tee shirt to go under the wetsuit. Hopefully it will be sunny so sun tan lotion and a hat would also be advisable.

Other Facilities

At the lake there are both male and female changing rooms which have a single hot shower within each. Please note we have a reasonably priced café on site that provides hot and cold food and refreshments, if you prefer to bring a packed lunch then that’s fine but we would ask that this is consumed away from the café area if it is busy. A water bottle/hydration system to take afloat/use at the bank side is recommended.
