British Canoeing SUP Sheltered Water Coach – Course Details

Stand Up Paddleboard Sheltered Water Coach – An ideal award for anyone wanting a formal and regulated qualification coaching SUP in a sheltered water environment, introducing fundamental skills up to 200 metres from the bank and up to force 3 winds. 



The course will be based at Taplow Lake but may also use the Jubilee River which is a few minutes’ walk from the lake. There is parking at the lake or Taplow railway station is 15 min’s walk away (3/4 mile)



Please ensure you bring with you to the first day of the course the following

  • Be a minimum of 18 years old.
  • Membership and registration with British Canoeing
  • British Canoeing Core Coach Training

 Candidate Registration

All candidates are required to register for the award with British Canoeing (or national association if appropriate).  Please note registration is separate to British Canoeing membership. Please use the following link from British Canoeing website -


Course Paperwork

Please ensure you bring with you to the first day of the course the following:

  • Evidence of registration with British Canoeing (see above)
  • Your completed Individual Information Form

Course Programme

The course comprises tuition, coaching practice, homework and assessment tasks over two days. The course runs from 09:00-18:00 each day. Please help yourself and your fellow candidates by arriving promptly for each session. Please aim to be at Engage Watersports at 08:45 on the first day.


Personal Clothing and Equipment

Please bring personal clothing and equipment suitable for going afloat or working from the bank appropriate to the weather conditions forecast for each day of the course. This should include water/wind proof outerwear and a hat. Please also bring personal paddling/coaching equipment, including a buoyancy aid if you have this.


If you wish to bring your own board and paddle(s) great, but this is not absolutely necessary as we will be using a variety of different boards from the Engage Watersports fleet during the course. Engage Watersports can also provide spare clothing/equipment for those that may require it i.e. wetsuits, buoyancy aids and windproof tops but please let us know in advance if you do require any item.


Other Facilities

At the lake there are both male and female changing rooms which have a single hot shower within each. Please bring to bring a packed lunch, tea and coffee facilities will be available through out the course.

Your Course Director will be Owen Burson, a member of the BC SUP Technical Committee, who wrote the original BC SUP DSM award, and has been involved in integrating SUP into BC right from start. He has SUP’d across the world, but is found most often on the South Coast.
