Your SUP Sheltered Water Award will give you the ability to organise and carry out an enjoyable and safe trip on the water up to 200 metres from shore, up to force 3 in winds. You will be confident in considering how far you can safely travel from the shore, whilst identifying safe exit points, expanding your knowledge of rescue techniques and looking at the external and environmental factors which may affect our journey. You will create proficient skills to anticipate and adapt to problems we may encounter to enable us to have a safe and enjoyable day out stand up paddleboarding.Stand Up Paddleboard Sheltered Water Coach – An ideal award for anyone wanting a formal and regulated qualification coaching SUP in a sheltered water environment, introducing fundamental skills up to 200 metres from the bank and up to force 3 winds. 



The course will be based at 2 location, day 1 on Taplow Lake and day 2 on the Jubilee River which is a few minutes’ walk from the lake. There is parking at the lake or Taplow railway station is 15 min’s walk away (3/4 mile)



Please ensure you bring with you to the first day of the course the following

  • Be a minimum of 18 years old.
  • Membership and registration with British Canoeing
  • British Canoeing Core Coach Training

Candidate Registration

All candidates are required to register for the award with British Canoeing (or national association if appropriate).  Please note registration is separate to British Canoeing membership. Please use the following link from British Canoeing website -


Course Paperwork

Please ensure you bring with you to the first day of the course the following:

  • Evidence of registration with British Canoeing (see above)
  • Your completed Individual Information Form

Course Programme

Over the course you will develop your understanding of how to paddle a Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) and plan a trip in sheltered water, using the appropriate abilities and decision making skills to paddle safely.


Personal Clothing and Equipment

Please bring personal clothing and equipment suitable for going afloat or working from the bank appropriate to the weather conditions forecast for each day of the course. This should include water/wind proof outerwear and a hat. Please also bring personal paddling/coaching equipment, including a buoyancy aid if you have this.


If you wish to bring your own board and paddle(s) great, but this is not absolutely necessary as we will be using a variety of different boards from the Engage Watersports fleet during the course. Engage Watersports can also provide spare clothing/equipment for those that may require it i.e. wetsuits, buoyancy aids and windproof tops but please let us know in advance if you do require any item.


Other Facilities

At the lake there are both male and female changing rooms which have a single hot shower within each. Please bring to bring a packed lunch, tea and coffee facilities will be available through out the course.

Your course instructor will be Chris Beal. Chris is Activities Director for Engage Watersports and has been involved in the outdoor / watersports sector for over 12 years. Chris has coached throughout Europe and has experience in teaching a wide range of sports including canoeing, kayaking, sailing, windsurfing, powerboating and Stand-up- Paddleboarding.
