Course Programme
The SUP Discipline Support Module is designed to assist participants understanding of the specialist discipline of SUP. The course introduces and explains the fundamental techniques and strategies for SUP paddlesport. The course is a mix of theory and practical activity.
Module Aims:
• Provide a background to the various disciplines within SUP.
• Introduce different types of equipment including the issues of equipment design, size and modification to suit all individual requirements.
• Introduce and develop the knowledge of SUP specific techniques and tactics
• Explore some SUP safety and rescue specifics
This is a really practical course thats gets you out on, and in the water exploring what SUP has to offer. It takes on very sheltered water, and there is no assessment just learning and having fun.
We will have lots of discussion on where SUP came from, and where it is going in the UK. This not a separate qualification, and is not a coaching endorsement, but may be used by an employer or deployer as a part of demonstrating your competence to lead simple introductions to SUP on sheltered water. If you wish to coach SUP then you should look at the BC SUP Coach award - we will discuss this award in depth on the SUP DSM however, so it may be an opportunity to find out more, and if the coach award is for you.
Personal Clothing and Equipment
Please bring personal clothing and equipment suitable for going afloat or working from the bank appropriate to the weather conditions forecast for each day of the course. This should include water/wind proof outerwear and a hat. Please also bring personal paddling/coaching equipment, including a buoyancy aid if you have this.
If you wish to bring your own board and paddle(s) great, but this is not absolutely necessary as we will be using a variety of different boards from the Engage Watersports fleet during the course. Engage Watersports can also provide spare clothing/equipment for those that may require it i.e. wetsuits, buoyancy aids and windproof tops but please let us know in advance if you do require any item.
Other Facilities
At the lake there are both male and female changing rooms which have a single hot shower within each. Please note we have a reasonably priced café on site that provides hot and cold food and refreshments, if you prefer to bring a packed lunch then that’s fine but we would ask that this is consumed away from the café area if it is busy. A water bottle/hydration system to take afloat/use at the bank side is recommended.
Your course instructor will be Chris Beal. Chris is Activities Director for Engage Watersports and has been involved in the outdoor / watersports sector for over 12 years. Chris has coached throughout Europe and has experience in teaching a wide range of sports including canoeing, kayaking, sailing, windsurfing, powerboating and Stand-up- Paddleboarding.
