The British Canoeing Paddlesport Leader qualification is suitable for paddlers taking on formal leadership responsibilities in shelter water conditions and who wish to lead, supervise or facilitate, safe, quality, enjoyable trips based on their group’s needs and aspirations. The award does not include progressive coaching of technical skills but focuses on learning through experience.
Location
There is parking at the lake or for those travelling by public transport Taplow railway station is 15 min’s walk away.
Pre-requisites
There is no requirement for formal training for the Paddlesport Leader award however this course is designed to support aspirant leaders’ other training (eg personal skills courses and FSRT) and experience prior to assessment.
Course Programme
This two day programme will explore the role and attributes of the Paddlesport Leader primarily in a practical environment making use of the open water of Taplow Lake and slow moving water on the nearby Jubilee River or River Thames.
The Paddlesport Leader can choose the craft from which they work, and can look after others in both single discipline and mixed fleets. This may include for example; racing craft, touring kayaks, open canoes, suitable sit-on-tops, general purpose kayaks, stand-up-paddleboards, or crew boats.
Personal Clothing and Equipment
Please bring personal clothing and equipment suitable for journeying appropriate to the weather conditions forecast for each day of the course. Engage Watersports can provide spare clothing/equipment for those that may require it i.e. wetsuits, buoyancy aids and windproof tops but please let us know in advance if you do require any item.
If you are able to bring your own boat/board and paddle(s) to the course please do so. If you require to borrow one of the Engage Watersports craft please let us know at the time of booking.
Other Facilities
Please note we have a reasonably priced café on site
that provides hot and cold food and refreshments, if you prefer to
bring a packed lunch then that’s fine but we would ask that this is
consumed away from the café area if it is busy. A water
bottle/hydration system to take afloat/use at the bank side is
recommended.
Your course director will be Andy Maxted, a British Canoeing Licenced Course Provider and all round paddlesport enthusiast. Andy brings over 40 years’ experience of canoeing and kayaking having raced in slalom, wild water and marathon, and led and participated in expeditions, white water paddling and creeking across the UK and Europe.
