Course Introduction

The British Canoeing Paddlesport Leader qualification is suitable for paddlers taking on formal leadership responsibilities in shelter water conditions and who wish to lead, supervise or facilitate, safe, quality, enjoyable trips based on their group’s needs and aspirations. The award does not include progressive coaching of technical skills but focuses on learning through experience.

The Paddlesport Leader can choose the craft from which they work, and can look after others in both single discipline and mixed fleets. This may include for example; racing craft, touring kayaks, open canoes, suitable sit-on-tops, general purpose kayaks, stand-up-paddleboards, or crew boats.

There is no requirement for formal training for the Paddlesport Leader award however this course is designed to support aspirant leaders’ other training (eg 3 Star personal skills courses and FSRT) and experience prior to assessment.

Course Programme

This two day programme will explore the role and attributes of the Paddlesport Leader primarily in a practical environment making use of the open water of Taplow Lake and slow moving water on the nearby Jubilee River or River Thames.

Personal Clothing and Equipment

Please bring personal clothing and equipment suitable for going afloat appropriate to the weather conditions forecast for each day of the course. This should include water/wind proof outerwear and a hat. Please also bring personal paddling equipment, including a boat, paddle, buoyancy aid, spraydeck, helmet, throwline and tow system if you have these.

If you are unable to bring your own boat, paddle, buoyancy aid, spraydeck or helmet, please advise this in advance of attending the course.

Other Facilities

At the lake there are both male and female changing rooms which have a single hot shower within each. Please note we have a reasonably priced café on site that provides hot and cold food and refreshments, if you prefer to bring a packed lunch then that’s fine but we would ask that this is consumed away from the café area if it is busy. A water bottle/hydration system to take afloat/use at the bank side is recommended.
