The Foundation Safety and Rescue Training course comprises a one day programme designed to provide paddlers and coaches with simple safe skills that can be applied appropriately when operating in a sheltered water environment. The training has two purposes: to provide participants with simple protocols and skills to help ensure the safety of themselves and others and to provide appropriate rescues skill and techniques to help themselves or others in difficulty. The course is designed for paddlers and bank-based coaches irrespective of craft. The training explores the similarities and differences of rescuing canoes and kayaks, racing and touring boats, closed and open cockpit craft, sit on tops and stand up paddleboards. The course does not include a formal assessment however all participants are expected to participate fully in all appropriate elements of the training. A certificate of attendance will be issued subsequent to successful completion of the course. Successful completion of the FSR training meets the safety pre-requisite for those wishing to attend a British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor (previously Level 1 Coach)
Please note on successful completion of this course there is a £10 (£5 British Canoeing members) certification fee payable directly to British Canoeing.
Due to the level of boat control required, paddlers need to hold the 2 Star performance award or be of that ability. Be able to swim in normal paddling/coaching clothing suitable for the prevailing conditions.
Be a minimum of 14 years of age.
Please bring personal clothing and equipment suitable for going afloat or working from the bank appropriate to the weather conditions forecast for the day of the course. This should include water/wind proof outerwear and a hat. Please also bring personal paddling/coaching equipment, including a buoyancy aid, towline or tow system, throwline, whistle and knife if you have these. If you are able to bring your own boat and paddle(s) great, but this is not absolutely necessary as we will be using a variety of craft from the Engage Watersports fleet during the course. Engage Watersports can also provide spare clothing/equipment for those that may require it i.e. wetsuits, buoyancy aids and windproof tops but please let us know in advance if you do require any item.
Please note we have a reasonably priced café on site that provides hot and cold food and refreshments, if you prefer to bring a packed lunch then that’s fine but we would ask that this is consumed away from the café area if it is busy. A water bottle/hydration system to take afloat/use at the bank side is recommended.
