The British Canoeing Canoe Award is designed to develop your ability to apply appropriate decision-making skills to an enjoyable and safe day out canoeing. Completion of the award endorses your skill, judgement and decision-making journeying in winds up to and including Force 3 and on Grade 1 rivers with simple eddy lines.
Our two-day course offers training for those setting out on the award and, for those with appropriate prior experience and skills, the opportunity to be assessed for the award. Please note there is a certification fee of £20 (£10 British Canoeing members) for those completing the assessment.
Location
The course will be based at two locations, day one will be on the Jubilee River, adjacent to Taplow lake, the second day will be conducted in the context of a short trip on the nearby River Thames
There is parking at the lake or for those travelling by public transport Taplow railway station is 15 min’s walk away.
Pre-requisites
There are no pre-requisites associated with this award however those seeking assessment must bring evidence of British Canoeing membership (if held) to qualify for the reduced certification fee.
Course Programme
The course will meet at Taplow Lake where transport will be arranged to facilitate a short journey on each day of the course. Candidates will need to bring snacks and a packed lunch including drinks for each day.
Personal Clothing and Equipment
Please bring personal clothing and equipment suitable for journeying appropriate to the weather conditions forecast for each day of the course. Engage Watersports can provide spare clothing/equipment for those that may require it i.e. wetsuits, buoyancy aids and windproof tops but please let us know in advance if you do require any item.
If you are able to bring your own canoe and paddle(s) to the course please do so. If you require to borrow one of the Engage Watersports craft please let us know at the time of booking.
Other Facilities
Please
note we have a reasonably priced café on site that provides hot and
cold food and refreshments, if you prefer to bring a packed lunch
then that’s fine but we would ask that this is consumed away from
the café area if it is busy. A water bottle/hydration system to
take afloat/use at the bank side is
recommended.
Your course director will be Andy Maxted, a British Canoeing Licenced Course Provider and all round paddlesport enthusiast. Andy brings over 40 years’ experience of canoeing and kayaking having raced in slalom, wild water and marathon, led and participated in expeditions, white water paddling and creeking across the UK and Europe.
